Computer Maintenance
Speed up Slow Computers
Computers that are slow stretch the patience of users to breaking point. The main cause is the number of programs that initially start up. We know how these programs are started and work with you to decide which ones you want and which ones you don’t. Other causes are shortage of disk space, or low memory for the programs that you need to run. If you need lots of programs running at the same time the simple solution is to increase the amount of memory as it is so cheap these days. Another cause is fragmentation of your system hard drive.
Sometimes there are more serious underlying problems that cause the computer to be slow. It could be a problem with the operating system installation (Windows XP for example). Another possibility is a hard drive fault. Whatever the problem we will fix it – unless the computer is inherently slow because it is too slow to run the software that you need. In that case we can recommend an upgrade path.
Share Printers and Files
If you have more than one computer in your home or office you may wish to share resources. For example you might have one printer that could be shared by all the computers. Provided that the printer is switched on and the computer that it is attached to is on, then it is easy to share it so that other computers can use it to print from.
Similarly files can be shared. A useful application is file backup, or simply to gain access to my documents on another computer. In an office environment file shares are often setup on a main computer or file server. Another application is to access files on a computer at a remote site. This can be achieved by setting up a secure virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet so that only you can access the files. We will advise on all aspects of file sharing – whether your requirements are simple or are more complex.
